In 1956, Swarovski and Christian Dior introduced the aurora borealis (AB) metallic coating for rhinestones, revolutionizing costume jewelry with its dazzling, over-the-top style. Dior licensed the innovation to American manufacturers, and by 1957, AB rhinestones were widely used in various jewelry designs. Despite its popularity, iridescent finishes had been used as early as the 1910s, gaining traction in the 1920s and 1930s, though often found partially worn on vintage pieces. These finishes were applied to plastic, glass beads, and rhinestones.
The term “aurora borealis” wasn’t coined until the mid-1950s. Before this, manufacturers and retailers referred to the finish as "iridescent rhinestones" or combined terms like "iridescent aurora borealis." We love Aurora Borealis jewelry here at Clover Collective Antiques! If you are a fan of vintage and color, this is for you.
