Ostby & Barton Co. was founded in 1879 by Engelhart Cornelius Ostby and Nathan B. Barton in Providence, Rhode Island. Ostby, a trained jeweler from Norway, emigrated to the U.S. in 1869, where he gained experience at several jewelry firms before starting the company. Despite modest beginnings with only $3,000 in capital, the firm became the world’s largest ring manufacturer, recognizable by its “O-B” stamp.

Ostby frequently traveled to Europe for inspiration, often accompanied by his daughter, Helene. In 1912, they booked first-class tickets on the Titanic for their return from France. When the ship struck an iceberg, Ostby perished, while Helene survived after being urged onto a lifeboat. She later recalled losing a cherished diamond pin but expressed that it didn’t matter in the face of such tragedy.
Following her father’s death, Helene, her brother Harold, and his daughter continued the family business, which thrived into the 1950s. Ostby & Barton produced a wide range of jewelry and was renowned for its quality and style. Their pieces remain highly valued by collectors, not only for craftsmanship but also for their historical significance.
Helene passed away in 1978 at age 88 and was buried near her father. Ostby & Barton jewelry continues to be treasured for its exceptional antique condition and Titanic legacy.
