The Starburst (also referred to as Sunburst) design rose to prominence during the Late Victorian or Aesthetic Period (1885-1901), following a shift from the somber Grande Period after Prince Albert’s death in 1861. The Romantic movement, which celebrated nature, emotion, and imagination, heavily influenced the motif. By 1885, society sought lighter, more whimsical designs inspired by the stars and the cosmos, reflecting a deeper quest for connection and purpose. The Aesthetic Period also saw a transition from handcrafted to machine-made jewellery, making pieces more uniform and affordable for the growing middle class, though many artisans still created handcrafted works for exclusivity.
This brooch/pendant is a quintessential celestial piece that takes inspiration from the heavens. Crafted in solid 10k rose gold (otherwise known as antique gold as it's not as “rosey” as its modern-day counterpart), this brooch/pendant is so whimsical and a perfect conversation starter.
