Since 1976, Ted Muehling has been creating jewelry and decorative objects inspired by the organic forms of nature. In his New York City studio, alongside a small team, he crafts both unique and multiple-edition pieces using a diverse range of materials, including precious and semi-precious stones, metals, pearls, plastic, horn, and wood.
Born in New Jersey in 1953, Muehling studied industrial design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he was mentored by Gerald Gulotta, Rowena Reed, and William Fogler. Their guidance instilled in him a deep appreciation for form, proportion, and balance, as well as the belief that design has the power to enhance life. Rather than following traditional industrial design methods, Muehling takes an artisanal approach, working directly with materials to embrace the unexpected discoveries that arise in the creative process.
In 1990, he opened his first store on the edge of SoHo in Manhattan, where his thoughtfully curated displays—including natural artifacts—offer insight into his inspirations and the essence of his work.
